Welcome to Abilene Texas
Abilene is a city in the North Eastern part of Taylor County, Texas. It can be reached by Interstate Highway 20, U.S. Highway 80, State Highway 36 and north-south by U.S. highways 83, 84, and 277. The population was 115,930 at the 2000 census.
It is the principal city of the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Abilene was settled by a community of ranchers, who set up operations in the mid 1800s. The Texas and Pacific railroad arrived in January 1881. Up to then, the area was solely based on agriculture. Some years after the railroad had arrived oil, light industry and service-based companies were established.There are three universities: McMurry University, Abilene Christian University and the Hardin-Simmons University.
